In this two part essay, I will be stating my point of view regarding two big mysteries of the show “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” by Lauren Faust. I will be using a coupe of You Tube analysts’ points of view. Please try to get through the entire thing.
To be honest, I have quite recently become a pegasister. I started watching the series after the end of season three but before the “Equestria Girl” movie. I have caught up by watching the episodes on You Tube and am recently caught up on season four. I have also rewatched the series because of watching the analysis, and review videos. Much of this essay is from these analysts, and the rest is headcanons.
PART 1: ALICORNS
I’m going to start off with Persian Poetess’ theory of how a pony becomes an alicorn.
She states that, to be eligible, a pony requires three things: The devotion to magical study and/or practice, the understanding of the power of friendship, and the creation of new magic.
Of course Lauren Faust said that Celestia and Luna were born as alicorns, but I could see how it all could have gone down if they weren’t. How? I’ll tell you. And for this, I’m going to include quite a bit of Tommy Oliver(or Brony Curious)’s point of view.
If Celestia and Luna were born as “normal” ponies, as Tommy Oliver theorizes, they would have needed the three factors previously stated. But first thing’s first. I agree with Mr. Oliver’s idea of Celestia and Luna controlling the rotation of the planet rather than the sun and moon.
I believe that these sisters found a way, presumably by their study and practice of magic, to cover the whole planet with the spell they created and started rotating it.
Well, I actually it was Celestia who created the spell after years of practicing magic and taught Luna the spell and put her in charge of the second half of the day. The spell that would have helped Luna become and alicorn is the one that enables her to visit other ponies’ dreams. And truthfully, if that was the spell she created, then Luna’s fall was probably partially because of the fact that many nightmare scenarios take place in a dark, night-like environment. And she was probably not allowed to interfere in dreams then, which would’ve made her feel useless. Eventually turning her into Nightmare Moon.
I’ll mention Cadence later, but as for Starswirl the Bearded, he was able to create a spell that changed a pony’s cutie mark and memories (as Tommy Oliver once stated) to which Twilight created an undoing spell to while trying, and succeeding, to help her friend. Showing the uses of the first and third factors working together.
As for “understanding the power of friendship”, I believe that it’s not so much the understanding of the power of friendship, but the understanding of a loving bond. Which is, if you were wondering, where Starswirl and King Sombra failed- as Persian Poetess stated in one of her videos. Starswirl may have been a powerful sorcerer, but he was lacking in love in tolerance. And Sombra pretty much ruled with fear and hatred.
Celestia and Luna, on the other hand, had their loving bond as sisters. They understood- or understand- that a loving environment begins at home with the family. They were best friends ever since the beginning because, in that chaotic world which was at that point ruled by Discord, they were probably all they had.
Cadence, who was actually born as a pegasus, understood the love between two ponies. And was, in my headcanon, able to bring out the best of every pony and was able to befriend any pony she wished. She was also given the ability to bring love forth more easily. In other words, I believe that the “celestial sisters” made Cadence an alicorn when they saw what she was able to do and made her some sort of cupid. I also believe that the crystal heart was assigned as an element to Cadence. The element of Love and hope, which, like the elemental gems, isn’t necessary to drag around. It can also work on its own and as a symbol.
But back to the understanding of a loving bond; Twilight understood the loving bond that Starswirl was unable to grasp. The loving bond of true friendship. The one that encouraged and mad Twilight strive to create the spell that would help her friends. Sort of making all three factors work together to make Twilight an alicorn.
But Celestia and Luna are different for some reason. But why?
My headcanon for this is that they have moved on from alicorn ponies, to alicorn horses. A sort of evolved power, or a level up in the equestrian state of existence. A step closer to reaching a final form, if you will…
We have seen horses in this show before. In the “Hearts Warming Eve” episode of season two, a group- the Windigos- were shown. They were shown as a mystical, even spirit-like creatures that dropped the temperature more and more as the hate in that particular spot increased. I believe that the horses are what most gamers or meme followers might call the “ultimate” or “final form” of the equine universe. Beings that have reached such high and mighty abilities that they have become God-like.
Yes. I am calling Celestia and Luna demigoddesses. My headcanon is that Celestia and Luna are the Hercules of Equestria (sort of).
Faust said they were born alicorns If they were, then they are yet to reach the rank of the Windigos. If they were born as pegasi, unicorns, or earth ponies, then they worked their ways up to the rank of demigoddesses who can later become actual goddesses.
They have stopped aging because they must have reached the perfect corporal or physical age.
But will or do Cadence and Twilight have this opportunity? Yes. I believe so.
Will they take it? Probably not.
Celestia and Luna have the sisterly of family bond pretty much in the bag. Seeing as they are seemingly immortal. That bond will not falter unless one is killed or rebels. Then, that love bond is no longer a bond nor is it able to be relevantly symbolized.
If Cadence decides to become immortal, but Shining Armor isn’t able to do the same, then Shining Armor can age and pass away as Cadence remains. Leaving that bond as irrelevant (but this one might not be as bad because of the crystal heart). And I think Cadence would prefer to grow old with her husband rather than watch him wither away like a plant as she remains in perfect condition.
If Twilight decides to become immortal, she would need to try and make her friends alicorns as well. But it took Twilight years of studies and her special intellect to become one of Celestia’s apprentices. So I doubt that the other five ponies could become alicorns that easily.
So until then, she would be forced to see her friends pass away… And I don’t think she’d like that either… I think she’d rather have Celestia find another group of ponies to represent the loving bond of true friendship once they are no longer able to.
Part 2: The Elements of Harmony
The mane six have been proven to be kind of unnecessary by the season premier, huh? Like, what’s the point of there being six ponies if it was shown that a single pony can carry out the job of wielding the elemental gems? Well let me shine a light to what I believe is the answer.
My answer starts off with a couple of questions of its own.
Who said that the elements were to be evenly distributed in the first place? Doesn’t every pony have a certain amount of the elements within them already? Maybe the elements of harmony work with the pony or ponies that use the elements harmoniously. For instance, Rainbow Dash wields the elemental gem of loyalty, right? But she also practices the element of honesty! That doesn’t mean that she can use both of the elemental gems. See: Rainbow Dash’s honesty can be rude at times and can make bad situations worse; like in the episode where Rarity makes outfits for all of the mane six. Apple Jack, on the other hand, uses her honesty in the situations in which it’s most needed. She also knows how to be honest without being harsh about it. Making a bad situation a bit more stable, and herself more worthy of the elemental gem she used.
In the same sense, Celestia and Luna were able to use the gems. The way in which they were divided between the sisters in the season premier was most likely for a reason. Celestia and Luna were able to use those specific gems, because those were the elements that they were able to use harmoniously. And by the time of Luna’s rebellion, Celestia was able to use all of the elements harmoniously. Which is why she was able to wield all of the gems to banish Nightmare Moon.
Cadence didn’t need to use the gems because her talent is for something different. But Twilight might have been able to use them on her own as well. In times of need.
PLUSS, THEY’RE ALICORNS. SO SPECIAL PRIVALEGES.
But what about the tree? How come the gems that represent the elements aren’t pure manifestations of the elements like Discord is of chaos? Why is the tree there? WHAT IS IN THE BOX?!
Honestly, I can’t really think of anything that isn’t religion based for this.
Maybe it’s Equestrian prophesy…
These things that have happened so far might be events leading to a greater event that might be deep prophetic… And the gems are sort of pure manifestations of the elements in a way.
Whatever is in that box- whatever Rainbow Power is, it may just be what the mane six need for that greater event. And in all prophesies, battle is usually something that needs to happen to reach a happy ending.
Will there be a chaotic battle? Only time will tell.
BUT AS OF LATE, IT IS MERELY RELEVANT TO THE PLOT AND RAINBOW POWER IS JUST FOR THE DIVERSITY IN THE TOYLINE. REMEMBER: “MY LITTLE PONY” WAS MEANT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY AND AIMED FOR THE YOUNG ONES. SO DON’T GET YOUR JIMMIES RUSTLED IF YOUR EXPECTATIONS AREN’T MET. ALL YOU COULD REALLY DOIS WATCH AND SUPPORT.
Thank you for getting through this all if you did.
